20 Best Video Games Of 2017

12. Pyre

Pyre Game
Supergiant Games

The third game from SuperGiant, they've essentially rolled together all lessons learned from both Bastion and Transistor - alongside one of the best stories of the year - to create a monumental career best (so far, anyway).

Playing as a group of exiled criminals attempting to play a series of basketball-esque games to win their freedom, Pyre blends isometric movement and on-the-fly tactics with hours upon hours of dialogue and character building. The twist is that upon winning certain matches, you can let one of your team go free - though chances are this will be the person you've bonded with the most (hence understanding why they deserve to be let go).

As such, you're fundamentally changing the way your team dynamic works, both in and out of matches, resulting in a number of different endings and scenarios along the way, that you'll still have to micro-manage when it comes to clashing personalities.

Overall though, just as a piece of art, Pyre and Supergiant have crafted something that is stunning in every sense of the word. They're one of the most promising and reliable developers in the industry, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
