11. Metroid: Samus Returns
Getting next to no coverage thanks to being on the 3DS in a year when a certain other new Nintendo console launched, Samus Returns is literally the side-scrolling Metroid fans have been asking for since 2002's Metroid Fusion, or 2004's Zero Mission.
Moving fluidly and coming with a range of new abilities like firing from dangling off ledges to melee counter-attacks, progression is the traditional "locked thing? Find item to progress" setup we've grown to know and love. Graphically it's the best 2D Metroid, and with such a time-tested series of mechanics, you'll be hurtling down chasms, memorising routes and revisiting old areas to uncover new secrets within minutes.
The return to form we've all wanted, Samus Returns deserves WAY more love and exposure.
