Following MKX, it almost felt like NetherRealm were starting to run out of ideas.

More gore, more fighters... the same old same old, with a new lick of paint.

Then Mortal Kombat 11 happened, and besides ditching things like the broken faction system from X, we have the most daring and confident story in MK history. Combining time-travel elements and a monumental, canon-resetting finale, core characters are now in uncharted territory, with newcomers making waves, and some lore retcons bringing others together in brilliant ways.

It may have launched with a game-breaking level of difficulty that felt designed to encourage microtransaction spending, but with that smoothed over and scores of worthwhile DLC characters to play with, this is a robust package for fight fans that just happens to have tons of iconic heroes and villains at the centre.
