20 Best Video Games Of The Generation (So Far)
13. Nioh
Dark Souls comparisons be damned, as yes, Nioh is ludicrously hard in spots - and will most likely put more people off than those who stick with it - but there is a TON more going on mechanically than in FromSoftware's titles.
Its core distinctive feel comes from lightning-fast combat, Onimusha-esque demon designs, stat-boosting guardian spirits, customisable contextual actions and a full-on loot system that'll let you grind for the best gear against the ghosts of other players, should you so desire. After only a couple of hours with Nioh, you'll get the feeling that Team Ninja took a step back from the industry for a reason: To design an interworking set of gameplay systems that are engaging, addictive and polished to a ridiculous degree.
Once it all clicks, there's a seal of quality across Nioh that walks the line between testing your gaming mettle and letting you surmount its challenge through patience, training and perseverance. Many have tried and failed to replicate the Souls formula', but Nioh strives to be radically different in a number of spots and succeeds immensely.
