Back to something that shaped the genre and its own franchise for years after launch, Resident Evil 4 took one look at how its predecessors handled action horror and promptly roundhouse kicked the rulebook into next week.

Director Shinji Mikami promptly switched the camera to a behind-the-back perspective, gave us a laser-focussed analogue targeting system, a bonkers script with some brilliant self-aware moments, and changed the face of gaming in the process.

There's a damn good reason RE4 is one of many gamers' favourites of all time, and as is clear from the minor graphical touchups that constituted its re-release on modern consoles, what Capcom nailed back in 2005, never needed to be iterated on or modified whatsoever.
