20 Biggest Games Of 2014: What Do We Already Know?

14. The Evil Within (August 29)

There's one major reason The Evil Within is on a lot of people's radars is Shinji Mikami. Mikami created the Resident Evil franchise, and now that he's bailed on the series and it's been pretty sucky ever since, he's gone about building his next IP, another supernatural survival horror that's absolutely dripping with promise. Given that both premiere survival horror franchises, Resident Evil and Silent Hill, have their best days behind them, Mikami has promised a terrifying experience that hearkens back to the genre's best efforts to date. Extensive gameplay footage has been shown off, of protagonist Detective Sebastian Castellanos being captured by a mysterious entity and having to fight his way through a dark underworld of grotesque enemies, and it's safe to say that it looks as horrifying as we could hope. Yes, some Resident Evil-inspired flourishes are there (like a chainsaw-wielding maniac), but this looks to be very much its own beast: visually stunning, atmospheric and soaked in the very same tension that has made the Amnesia series the go-to survival horror franchise of the moment. Will It Deliver? Whether it can be a genre classic or not remains to be seen, but from what we've gleaned so far, this will be what the later Resident Evil and Silent Hill games should have been.
