20 Biggest Video Game Bombs Of 2025

17. Avowed

Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2
Obsidian

Avowed is a real mixed bag, since almost every positive attribute can be cancelled out by a negative.

Although the Pillars of Eternity spin-off has engaging weapons, the battles are compromised by arbitrary RPG systems. The gaming world is noticeably larger than Obsidian's last project, The Outer Worlds, but feels empty. Despite the fact the artwork is lush, the deluge of technical issues ruin the immersion.

But the good outweighs the bad, since Avowed was recommended by 84% of critics on OpenCritic. It was rated between 77-80% on MetaCritic, which isn't astounding but also not to be sniffed at. On top of that, Avowed was nominated for Best Role Playing Game of the Year. (Not bad for a development team that only consisted of 80 people.)

However, the paying customers were far from impressed. Avowed managed less than 20,000 concurrent users, which is modest at best for a high-profile release. If that wasn't humiliating enough, the game saw an unprecedented 98% drop over the next month, reducing its numbers down to under 400 players.

The critical rating may be decent, but Avowed's popularity (or lack of) will decide whether it'll last much longer.
