The 2021 Guardians of the Galaxy is everything a Marvel fan could want out of a game based on their beloved IP. It’s a fun adventure with plenty of witty banter, action, and arguably a better characterization of the titular heroes than their MCU counterparts.

The game has received great reviews and was even the second best-selling game in the UK at the time of its release, but despite this apparent success, it was still considered a bomb, completely failing its studio’s sales expectations.

There are two major reasons for why this was the case. The first one was the game’s pricing. At the time of its release, Guardians of the Galaxy’s $60 price tag was a huge turn-off for the majority of players, as the market was only just getting accustomed to the new pricing norm.

The second reason was the release of Marvel’s Avengers a year prior. The game, also published by Square Enix, turned out to be a huge disappointment with its subpar gameplay and microtransactions, and it left the public wary of another Square Enix Marvel game.

It’s a shame because in terms of gameplay and story Guardians of the Galaxy is the polar opposite of its Avengers predecessor.
