20 Biggest WTF Moments In Assassin's Creed History
8. Everything About Assassin's Creed 3's GameStop Trailer
If you pre-ordered Assassin's Creed 3 from GameSpot, you'd receive Captain Kidd's Sword, a unique weapon available in the Mayan Ruins.
Now, pre-order bonuses are nothing new, but this particular advertisement came across as remarkably self-aware. In the trailer, Connor tells a group of soldiers to wait for him, before running off into a elaborate montage across several locations from the game. He eventually arrives at the Mayan Ruins, where he plucks the sword from an ancient crypt and montages his way back to the beginning.
It probably wasn't meant to be taken this way, but the trailer seemed like it was alluding to the obtrusiveness of pre-order practices, and the manner by which publishers divide content into numerous, arbitrary pre-order bonuses.
I mean, the action is literally halted while Connor runs off to collect a sword, which should have been included in the game to begin with. The montage just makes the whole process seem even more tedious, a pointless exercise in faffing about, a distraction for those happy enough for their time to be wasted.
Again, I'm not sure if that's the message they intended. It most likely wasn't, but a man can dream.
