19. Random Cameos From Famous Historical Figures

Casually bumping into famous historical figures has been a staple of Assassin’s Creed since the second instalment in the series, which first introduced the character of Leonardo Da Vinci, whose relationship with Ezio was surprisingly endearing. The two characters shared a genuine connection; their interactions were playful, and their relationship felt remarkably sincere. Da Vinci also served an actual purpose in the game, decrypting codex pages and supplying Ezio with various inventions, including his illustrious flying machine.

Since AC II, however, the series’ reliance on historical cameos has become pretty ridiculous, especially in the case of Assassin’s Creed 3, in which Connor Ratonhnhaké:ton encounters all of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock and George Washington in the space of about five minutes. He even witnesses the signing of the declaration of independence, which is as comically jarring as it sounds.

I’m not suggesting they do away with these characters altogether, but when your protagonists are meeting everyone from Charles Darwin and Karl Marx to Queen Elizabeth 1 and Napoleon Bonaparte, things are bound to start feeling slightly cartoonish.
