20 Disappointing Video Games That Didn't Fulfil Their Potential

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of the Kuma
Versus Evil

Look, there’s a certain saying that you can’t polish a certain object. You can bring that sentiment towards Afro Samurai 2, but I can’t help but feel like there’s something there, something more.

Inspired by the manga of the same name, the first Afro Samurai game, while not perfect, became a cult classic in the years that followed on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I can’t help but believe that Afro Samurai 2 could’ve followed a similar trend, but was unfortunately launched in an almost unplayable state that rendered any hope for the future hopeless.

Following the character of Afro, you fight through waves of enemies to eventually battle Kuma, who challenges Afro for the Number One headband. Simple enough, but sometimes all you need is addictive gameplay and a simple story to get going.

Many complained that Afro Samurai 2 suffered from constant visual glitches, an awful camera and bad controls. If this were released on the PS1 or PS2, this would be a death sentence, and that would be that, but with its release on the PS4, there was hope that many of the issues could be sorted. It wasn’t, and Afro Samurai 2 was eventually pulled from Steam and PSN and made many people’s ‘Worst Game of the Year’ list.

Hey, I’m Matt. I work full-time at WhatCulture's neighbours, MyVoucherCodes. I first joined MyVoucherCodes as a Deals Expert, scouring the internet, leaving no stone unturned in finding the best discount codes, sales and offers for our customers. Moving into my first home during the worst possible time (during lockdown), I understand the necessity of saving money when the purse strings are tight. Outside of saving money, I’m into video games, movies, books and music. I host and edit a video game podcast called The Retry Hard Podcast, where my friend and I go through news, reviews and video games in general. I love movies and watching how they’re made, and I’ve worked as a set decorator for a few months on His Dark Materials season 3, which gave me a massive insight into how it all comes together. I also put out music as a solo artist named Matt Kiano, where I won the award for Best Male Artist of 2025 for Radio Wigwam and have been nomiated for Best Live Act at the 2026 Radio Wigwam Awards.
