20 Classic Nintendo Games That Desperately Deserve Sequels

3. Mario Paint

Nintendo has been tapping into the talents of the artistic crowd with their recent Art Academy series, but that seems to have an overall more serious approach to drawing. Even the upcoming Pokemon Art Academy follows that lead, with "lessons" and the like. What a new Mario Paint would bring to the table is something for those of us who just want to mess around and have fun, rather than learn anything. As Art Academy itself demonstrates, the time couldn't be better, either, what with the ability to use a touchscreen and stylus instead of a mouse. Done well, it would make for a fine integration with the Miiverse Nintendo has already set up. One of the key features of Mario Paint was the ability to create and use "stamps," which were basically pixel art you could play with in a number of ways. Several newer Wii U titles are already incorporating a new type of stamp (the black and white line art featured in titles such as Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8), and a new Mario Paint could expand the concept further. Beyond that, the march of technology could take the original concept well beyond what we were forced to deal with in the original. Fewer memory limitations mean more stamps, artwork, music, animations, and more could be saved, rather than the one instance of each the Super NES allowed (and if you wanted to preserve it, you had to record it on a VHS tape). What's more, if you want to share, Nintendo has in place ways of sharing such creations on the Miiverse, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and even YouTube. It's great that Nintendo is including some elements of Mario Paint in the upcoming Mario Maker, but the time is right for an actual new Mario Paint.
