20 Craziest Moments In Gaming In 2025
14. Nintendo Is Reviving Its Greatest Failure
Though Nintendo has dropped the ball on many occasions, the Virtual Boy is undeniably their greatest failure.
Serving as an early attempt at VR, the infamous gadget was marketed as a portal 3D graphics system, using a stereoscopic display to create depth. Unfortunately, the red monochrome visuals caused users to sustain eye strain, headaches, and dizziness. The Virtual Boy ultimately sold 770,000 units, making it one of the worst selling consoles of all time.
So, when Nintendo announced they were re-releasing the disastrous system, nobody was sure whether they were joking.
Despite the justified skepticism, Virtual Boy games will be available in February 2026 to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. To play the 15 games being released, owners need to insert the Switch into a VB accessory or cardboard goggles, similar to a Labo kit.
Now, technology has advanced lightyears since the Virtual Boy's launch, so it's possible this re-release won't have a similarly negative reception.
But at the same time, you'd think Nintendo would distance themselves from the Virtual Boy as much as possible rather than giving their biggest dud another shot.
