13. The Entire Premise Is Nuts - The Alters

The Alters opens with an incompetent builder, Jan Dolski, on a space vessel, making its way to an alien planet. Before touching down, a calamity occurs that results in the death of every passenger but Jan. Unqualified to continue the expedition, Jan uses a quantum computer to create versions of himself from alternate realities, each with the tools needed to complete the operation.

It goes without saying that The Alters stands out for its playing-god premise and the way it delves into the metaphysical so imaginatively. At one point, Jan can create a Miner Alter, who lost his arm in his past life. Despite having all his limbs intact, the clone feels like his arm is missing, causing him to suffer reverse phantom pain.

If that's not trippy enough, your decisions may lead to Alters mutilating or even killing themselves. If they psychologically spiral or jeopardise the mission, you may have to dispose of them. Also, having to kill people who share your face never stops feeling weird.

The Alters doesn’t shy away from Jan being forced to deal with the emotional and logistical consequences of each decision, making the playthrough potentially traumatic.
