The Doom saga is so relentless bombastic, there are times where you can get desensitised to the over-the-top missions and screen-filling bosses.

In Doom: The Dark Ages, The Doom Slayer can soar across the battlefield while riding a cyber-dragon. Other times, he can stomp around inside a 30-storey mech, smashing skyscraper-sized demons with metal fists. Although these scenarios are cool as hell, veterans have come to expect theatricality on this scale.

However, there's one moment in The Dark Ages that should've caught everybody off-guard. To slaughter The Old Ones, The Doom Slayer detonates a self-destruct device, killing himself in the process.

Initially, it looks like the devil-blasting warrior nobly sacrificed himself for the greater good. But as Doom has established, dying isn't always the end. When The Doom Slayer's soul is sent to Hell, he refuses to accept his fate. Desperate to complete his mission, he fights through a legion of demons and crawls his way back to the mortal plane.

The Doom Slayer has always been tough as nails, but watching him resurrect himself to continue fighting the good fight is peak badass.
