14. Herzog Zwei
Fancy a bit of Command & Conquer, do you? How about a marathon Starcraft session? Well, you have Technosoft's Herzog Zwei to thank for much of what makes those games great. While not officially the first real-time strategy game, this 1989 Sega Mega Drive gem is widely considered one of the most influential examples of the genre. There was amazing depth here, complex micromanagement, and stunning unit balance which future RTS games would aspire to, yet it was blown to pieces by the press. We just weren't ready for something with such a steep learning curve, so we shunned it. Looking back, Herzog Zwei should be remembered as a hugely significant chapter of RTS history.
