20 Game Anniversaries Coming In 2026 That'll Age You Mercilessly
11. Battlefield 1 Turns 10
DICE’s first-person shooter franchise Battlefield has been going for more than twice the length of the first and second world wars combined, and there were so many Battlefield games and expansions out there by the time Battlefield 1 arrived that it felt like high time things were overhauled and given a bit of a new sheen – by, uhh, going farther back in time.
Set during WWI, Battlefield 1 was the first of the series to release solely to eighth gen consoles, and it shows. The graphics are rich, the gameplay immersive, and it managed to do the (nearly-) unthinkable: make the first world war interesting for modern players. The campaign may be short, but it impressively captures the spirit of the war and gives us the opportunity to dive into some of the great theatres, including the Western and Italian Fronts.
But this is supposed to be the new game; the reinvention; the fresh, bold take on the series – not the work of an entire decade ago! 2016 feels like the time that the Battlefield: Bad Company sequel, or Battlefield 3 at a push, came out, and yet it was the year of 1; the year Donald Trump was voted in the first time; the year Britain Brexited. How time flies.
