Tony Hawk’s Project 8 was a bold new direction for a franchise that was selling and performing well despite having been operating on largely the same gameplay style for the better part of a decade. Granted, it didn’t reinvent the wheel, but the gameplay and new game engine really felt like a big step up, with an expansive, linear open world to skate and fun new features including Nail the Trick and the bananas ragdoll bail feature that allows you to rack up a sizeable hospital bill.

The recent resurgence of Tony Hawk skating games – with the eighth and ninth gen remasters of Pro Skaters 1, 2, 3 and 4 – has reminded us of just what was great about the franchise, and has left us with hopes that we’ll see some original entries in the near future.

But while original the Pro Skater games feel old enough to dust the cobwebs off and remaster, Project 8 still feels like one of the new kids on the block. Maybe it’s because it was the series’ first game for seventh gen consoles, or maybe because the games that followed – especially Pro Skater 5 – couldn’t live up to the legacy, but the fact it’s been around for two decades and counting just doesn’t feel true. If they remaster this one, the announcement alone might kill a few Millennials.
