20 Game Anniversaries Coming In 2026 That'll Age You Mercilessly
17. Overwatch Turns 10
Blizzard's Overwatch arrived in the wake of the 2014 cancellation of MMORPG Titan, when most of the development team moved towards a new FPS, and wound up creating a teamwork-based shooter that would prove more popular than anyone could have imagined. The late-2015/early-2016 beta drew 10 million players, and by the time it launched properly the game was already an all-timer.
Choosing from a bulked-out roster of heroes with unique abilities and classes that affect your style of gameplay, the game puts you sixty years in Earth’s future. The international task force Overwatch that used to protect the planet’s inhabitants from AI and other threats has been torn apart, and the remaining disparate members unite in secret to find answers about why the organisation was brought down to begin with. But that’s besides the point: the game is all about shooting, surviving and scoring big.
The big esport scene that popped up around the game (with Overwatch League, Contenders and World Cup arriving in its wake) feels like a moment that is very much still happening, and yet it has been a whole ten years since the game dropped. Nonetheless, gamers continue to keep Overwatch and its far more recent sequel buzzing via live and online events, and even a further ten years from now it will likely still seem fresh.
