15. Driving In Reverse On Dinosaur Canyon (Daytona USA)

In addition to the thrill of competing against friends and strangers; basking in vivid new locales; and modifying vehicles to your heart’s content, one of the biggest joys of playing racing games is going off the main path to find new routes.

Such sightseeing can have several positive results, such as unlocking hidden trophies, discovering easter eggs, and/or most importantly, achieving faster lap times and easier wins. Whatever the case may be, game creators usually like to reward players for having the tenacity and imagination to explore every aspect of every level.

In the case of Sega’s 1994 arcade classic Daytona USA, though, the opposite happens if drivers dare to venture away from where the developers intended during an advanced difficulty match on Dinosaur Canyon.

In particular, turning around immediately before the pit stop by the starting line places your car in the path of a new ramp. If you keep going as “Reverse” urgently flashes on the screen, you’ll quickly hit a concrete wall with a yellow sign that – in bold black text – reads: “Congratulations. You Just Lost Your Sponsors!”

Unfortunately, so much time has passed by now that it’s virtually impossible to turn around, hit the gas, and win the race.

At least the 2010 HD remake, Sega Racing Classic, gives you a trophy/achievement for the misguided detour.
