Despite mixing things up with new weapons, maps, modes, and customization options, 2022’s Splatoon 3 smartly sticks to the winning formula of its two adored predecessors. Naturally, that means that it also pitted the heroic and adorable Inklings and Octolings against a wicked main foe fixated on causing chaos.

Set five years after the events of 2017’s Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3’s single-player campaign tasks plucky protagonist Agent 3 and various companions with getting rid of dangerous and debilitating new toxin Fuzzy Ooze – which turns things into Fuzzballs – across locations such as central hub Splatsville and the snow-covered Alterna.

Eventually, gamers square off against returning antagonist mastermind Mr. Grizz, who wants to cover Earth in the toxic substance. With help from companion Hugefry redeemed villain DJ Octavio, Agent 3 should be able to save the day and defeat Mr. Grizz by covering him in fuzzballs within about three-and-a-half minutes.

So, what happens if Agent 3 runs out of time?

Expectedly, Mr. Grizz’s plan goes off without a hitch, turning the planet’s inhabitants into Fuzzballs. At the same time, pop idol star Frye Onaga cries, “Splatsville! We failed yooou!” before an artificial intelligence called O.R.C.A. similarly declares: “On that day…a massive Fuzzball was born in space.”

It’s a very bleak outcome for such an endearingly colourful adventure.
