With all the violent murder that takes place in the MK franchise, a little levity can go a long way, and that's where Johnny Cage comes in. Evidently a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Johnny Cage is a hilariously overconfident actor in martial arts films, who enters MK in order to prove that his skill is his own and not mere Hollywood special effect. Due to being something of a developer joke, Cage isn't the most inherently strong or skilful fighter in the MK games, but he's best remembered for some of his undeniably badass moves, such as the Shadow Kick and the split-legged Groin Punch. Cage is proof that, as gory as the MK franchise may be, it never loses sight of its own silliness. This was made clear once again in 2011's reboot, where a new fatality was added in which Cage would chop his opponent's skull in half with his bare hand, then grab an Oscar statuette and shove it in the gaping hole left behind. Hilarious.
