It was set to bring the beloved company into the world of 3D, and it was the follow-up to a console that had a higher density of classic games than any other. During its lifespan, the Nintendo 64 was widely considered to be a bit of disappointment, mainly because it made use of cartridges over a disc-based format. The years have been kind though, and the Nintendo 64 is now generally looked back on as an underappreciated gem. In many ways, it had an ever greater impact on the industry than Sony's more popular PlayStation. Super Mario 64 changed the navigation of 3D environments forever, while GoldenEye 007 started off the console shooter craze that still exists today.
