20 Greatest Multiplayer Games Ever

4. Quake 3: Arena

Developer: id Software Platform: PC, Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 Release: 1999 Quake 3: Arena was the finest game to ever emerge from the classic multiplayer shooters of the nineties. Removing almost every superfluous single-player element and focusing entirely on the multiplayer that the series had become known for, Quake 3: Arena is notable for its high speed gameplay, freedom of movement and hugely popular competitive scene. The gameplay of Quake 3: Arena is absolutely timeless, and can even feel like a refreshing change amid the slower paced military shooters that have been widely popular for the last half decade or so. Rocket-jumping, bunny hopping and strafe-jumping played a huge part in the online multiplayer, and making yourself a difficult target while still retaining a high level of accuracy was paramount. Great level design combined with the fast, frenetic gunplay ensured that Quake 3: Arena is still remembered as one of the greatest FPS multiplayer titles of all time.
