20 Greatest Multiplayer Games Ever

3. Dota 2

Developer: Valve Platform: PC, Mac OS X, Linux Release: 2013 Dota 2 is a full-fledged remake of the original WarCraft III mod from 2003, bringing the classic MOBA gameplay to Valve's Source engine (soon to be Source 2, according to rumours). For the uninitiated, Dota 2 has two teams of five players battling against each other, in an attempt to destroy each other's bases. It's proven to be a colossal success for Valve, and Dota 2 has been at the top of the most played spot for well over a year now. Perhaps most notably, Dota 2 does free-to-play better than just about every other game on the market, which is the main reason for why it's been listed so much higher than League of Legends. Unlike League, every hero is available from the beginning for free, something vital in a game like Dota 2 where team composition is highly important. Only cosmetics can be paid for, leaving the gameplay to stand on its own, outside any constraints imposed by a monetary system.
