Deus Ex was released in the year 2000 but was set 52 years in the future worryingly, the year 2052 has crept up on us by 14 years but the future presented in Deus Ex is different enough from our own to maintain its sci-fi status. You play as a United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition agent named JC Denton. The world around you is quickly descending more and more into a dystopian landscape and you have the task of aiding in the war against terrorism. As the game progresses you become further entwined in the chaos and encounter groups such as the Triads and the Illuminati on your various missions. Deus Ex received astounding reviews on its release and rightfully remains a beloved game to this day. It accomplished the tricky task of amalgamating genres it wasnt just a vanilla shooter, as it also used RPG and stealth elements. The game was also tailored to the decisions you made giving cause for the player to pause and consider the impact of their choices. The use of players decisions helped to influence subsequent games in the genre to follow a similar format which allowed for a more intricate narrative. The effect of the decisions on the outcome of the game also meant that you could spend hours on end replaying Ion Storms cyberpunk-themed classic.
