The granddaddy of the space combat sim which practically rendered everything which had preceded it as irrelevant, Wing Commander boasted a winning cocktail of challenging gameplay, gorgeous graphics and a captivating sci-fi narrative. You played as a rookie pilot looking to learn the ways of space conflict and make a name for himself in the conflict against the Kilrathi. This may seem extremely reminiscent of Battlestar Galatica, but the Kilrathi are actually a war-loving feline race, hell-bent of satisfying their lust for aggression and violence. Wing Commander boasts an exceptional learning curve which really does nurture you from trainee fighter to master of the fleet as you gun down hundreds of the Kilrathi along the way. By the end of the game you will be punished for the smallest of mistakes when handling your spacecraft, requiring a huge amount of skill and precision from the player. Whenever you felt like you were starting to get frustrated with 1990s classic space combat sim, the engrossing story which would appeal to any sci-fi fan made you suck it up and get back in the virtual cockpit.
