Putting the ship back on course in more ways than one was this years Assassins Creed. Whilst the annual releases are starting to create a very poignant sense of series-fatigue by way of essentially re-enacting the same gameplay sequences over and over again, Black Flag actually gave us a great likeable protagonist in Edward Kenway, a man bound only by a greed that ends up getting him into some pretty fun predicaments. In a narrative departure from the series, Kenway is not a disciple of the Creed that guided every other hidden-bladed character weve previously embodied. As well as this theres a very fourth wall-shattering revelation on the part of what has happened in the modern day sections of the game, for the sake of continuing that portion of the game. Sans spoilers, its worth pointing out that youll either love what theyve done, or roll your eyes into a neighbouring country, yet if the latter is the case you cannot argue it works wonders for the franchise. With an expansive Caribbean landscape yours for the taking, alongside any number of ships that can be captured and pillaged for upgrades, the high seas are yours for the taking, and as Kenway develops a keen sense for the theatrical, youll be deftly grabbing a rope to swing into the fray with an increasingly wide grin on your face every time.
