You wake up on an island, the only thing you hear is a voice telling you that youd better prepare for the coming nightfall...what do you do? Such a question is the only exposition youll get when embarking down Dont Starves beautifully Tim Burton-esque rabbit hole. Playing as Winston, a Gentleman Scientist, your first task is surely to find a light source, as with the coming of night is the advancing creatures you cannot see, and if at any point in the game you do not have suitable means to create a light source, its permanent game over, requiring a complete restart. Very harsh, Im sure youll agree. However the flipside is a genuine sense of accomplishment and momentary safety when you venture far into the wilderness to procure the items for your first campfire, a feeling heightened when you construct your first pickaxe to fell a tree, or javelin to skewer a rabbit for dinner. How much longer can you survive? What can you find, what can you build, and why are you there? Rest assured there is an entire world to explore, one that is procedurally generated every time you start anew, a trait that forces you to become accustom to your surroundings upon every restart, yet provides infinite replayability. From the magnificent art style and sound design from animation-wizards Klei Entertainment, Dont Starve is an absolute joy, and something that every gamer should play, for if you have the wherewithal to keep going, the rewards both intrinsic and extrinsic are vast and bountiful.
