Animal protagonists were all the rage for a while on the Megadrive - as anyone who can remember the travesty that was the Bubsy the Bobcat games could attest to - but Konami got theirs right with Sparkster, who was an opossum knight who could also command vehicles. Bring one of the main men behind some of the Contra games into the fold and you have a recipe for success.

What resulted was a frenetic run 'n' gun game that had plenty of platforming elements and the occasional vehicular section, meaning players always had plenty of variety. The game also looked amazing and simply oozed character from every pixel.

The game was pretty much universally praised when it was released but never quite achieved the popularity of SEGA's own animal mascot. Sparkster came back into the gaming fold in 2009 with Rocket Knight, though it still didn't match the sheer quality of the original.
