While many will point towards Revenge of Shinobi as being the pinnacle of Joe Musashi's adventures on the Megadrive, it was with the less-played Shinobi III that he really hit his stride, marking the game out as the best of the lot.

With better graphics and a higher tempo than Revenge, Shinobi III still offered plenty of challenge and was an exhilarating experience from beginning to end.

Besides, what other game gives you the chance to be a ninja while you are riding a horse or a surfboard-jet ski hybrid? It was levels like those that helped it to stand apart from Revenge and set out its stall as the best Shinobi game of all time.

Happily, the game is readily available on the Virtual Console and a number of compilations if you don't want to pay the rather inflated asking price for an original cart.
