Somewhere in the infinite multiverse, there's a world where Forrest Gump intoned "Life is like a Sonic Team game - you never know what you're gonna get".

As much as Sonic fans everywhere would like to mark out for Sonic's first ever open world game, the question needs to be asked: Which Sonic Team will we get here? The talented developers who created the excellent Sonic Generations and Sonic Colours? Or the lunatic hacks who thought the abysmally poor Sonic '06 and Sonic Forces deserved Sonic fans' money?

Sonic Frontiers feels very much like it will be 2022's Halo Infinite. The latter game seemed to be teetering between triumph and disaster before launch (before releasing to glorious success), and Frontiers elicits very similar feelings.

This is either going to be a triumphant comeback or spectacular failure from one of gaming's most wildly inconsistent developers, and we can't wait to see what happens.

(And hey, even if it does flop at least Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks great! "Do I look like I need your power?" gave this long-time Sonic fan goosebumps).
