20 Most Embarrassing Video Game Moments Of The Decade
10. Everything About Gamergate
Alright, strap in, because this one is a doozy.
In 2014, certain women in the video game industry were targeted by the communaity for, at its core, sexist reasons, including game devs Zoe Quinn and Brianna Wu, and outspoken feminist Anita Sarkeesian.
A blog post by Quinn's ex-boyfriend is what sparked the whole thing, accusing Quinn of entering a "romantic relationship" with a gaming journalist for Kotaku, Nathan Grayson, thereby supposing that her game, Depression Quest, received positive coverage in turn.
But the truth was Grayson had never reviewed her game for Kotaku, and his only article even referring to her was published before the relationship had began. All of this was irrelevant though, because what came next was a whirlwind of hate and drama.
Quinn would receive death threats and constant harassment, as the situation became a jumping-off point for 'ethics in game journalism'. Unfortunately, she wouldn't be the only person to receive this kind of treatment, just the first.
Truthfully, Gamergate went on for far too long (and to some, is still ongoing), with everything that happened being too large for one article. Instead, this is just a fraction of it, but thankfully Quinn has gone on to co-found Crash Override, which helps victims of online harassment.
