There may not be a company that has severely annoyed their fans more than Overkill has across 2015 and 2016. First, the company completely went back on their word that they would never add microtransactions to Payday 2, and second, they treated their unpaid moderators worse than dirt, which resulted in them going on strike. Third, they offered an empty apology for the microtransactions after simply ignoring the controversy with no signs of removing them.

This all started during Crimefest, when Overkill released two safes that could only be unlocked with special drills. These drills couldn't be obtained in game however, and cost $2.50 each. Then it came out that some of the weapons that would be obtained as drops from these safes were significantly better than the guns in-game.

Say hello to a pay-to-win model in Payday 2.

While Overkill would patch in the ability to obtain these drills, the drop rate wasn't certain and the damage had already been done. Things got worse with the addition of Team Boosts and more and the games reputation really hasn't come back from it since.
