20 Most Embarrassing Video Game Moments Of The Decade
1. 2011 Playstation Network Outage
The granddaddy of them all, the hacking of the Playstation Network back in 2011 that caused PSN to be down for a full 23 days and the information of 77 million accounts to be compromised. 77 million. Between April 17 and April 19, 2011, the PSN was hacked by an outside source which caused Sony to shut the network down on April 20.
A week after the intrusion, Sony issued a statement saying that it could not rule out the possibility of personal information having been stolen. This was a week after the breach and users claim if it was bad enough that Sony was forced to shut down the network, users should have been notified earlier on the breach of their information.
In response to the outage, users were issued numerous "gifts" for their troubles. Sony gave everyone 30 days free of a Playstation Plus membership and Hulu even gave members a free week of Hulu Plus. On top of that, users were given their choice of four free games, two PS3 games and two PSP games. Games varied by region but included InFamous and LittleBigPlanet, among others.
Sony has said that the costs of the outage were $171 million, and the breach led to them forcing all users to change their passwords upon signing back into the network. It was a catastrophic security failure on behalf of the company, and one that will be remembered for a very long time.
