16. Need For Speed Payback

Release Date: November 10 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

The Hype: The Need for Speed franchise seems stuck in a rut as of late, but Payback hopes to change that with the clear inspiration it draws from the Fast and the Furious movies.

The game's single-player mode focuses on "action driving", with cinematic set-pieces being seamlessly integrated into the more typical racing mayhem.

It's a neat idea if developer Ghost Games can make the concept more than a superficial gimmick, and as franchise fans will be elated to hear, the game can be played totally offline, the lack of which was a major complaint of 2015's underwhelming reboot.

With so much competition in the racing sphere right now, with not only Gran Turismo Sport but also Forza Motorsport 7 just released on the Xbox One, the hype seems a little lower than usual for a Need for Speed game releasing in barely a month's time, but that doesn't mean it won't serve up a welcome jolt to the series' tired formula.
