It's a labyrinthine story with multiple variables, but the crux involves wife Anna looking to terminate her pregnancy as the Baron, being an abusive alcoholic, has driven her to flee. This results in a miscarriage with the foetus being buried and forgotten about, yet in the world of the Witcher, any latent "energy" or ill will can manifest into something far worse.

Thus, to avoid the body turning into an evil creature (it's already a purple goblin called a Botchling), the Baron has to reconcile with what he's done, alongside showing love and respect to the child, despite its undead state.
