20 Most Terrifying Enemies In Video Game History

11. The Kaernk - Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia is all about robbing whatever sense of safety and comfort players are given until there's nothing left but a blubbering mess of tears.

The very act of gazing upon the monsters lumbering through Brennenburg's corridors is enough to induce all-consuming madness, and players are encouraged to avoid confrontation as offensive options are entirely out of the question. The longer you're exposed to danger, the faster your sanity plummets and while the light provides some relief, it's sure to draw out the very threat you're meant to avoid.

It's a tricky balancing act that's further complicated once you reach the castle's dank cellar where the Kaernk - water-dwelling creatures that are completely invisible to the naked eye - lay waiting. With little beyond the occasional ripple or splash to mark the creatures' movements, traversing the cavernous tunnels becomes a matter of on-the-fly improvisation.
