20 Most Terrifying Enemies In Video Game History
9. The Nemesis/Mr. X - Resident Evil Series
Looking at the Nemesis, it's hard to shake the feeling that the big brains at Umbrella were in a panic about budgetary concerns and decided to cut costs by stapling together slabs of meat from whatever they had lying around the morgue, but the overall effect is undeniably powerful.
Walls, doors, windows - you could put fort Knox between the two of you and the Nemesis will still plough through it like the world's meatiest wrecking ball. And that rocket launcher? The damn thing might as well be grafted to his arm for all the luck you'll have divorcing the two.
And while the Nemesis' predecessor might not be as immediately iconic as ol' big and handsome, what really sets Mr. X apart is his restraint (relatively speaking) as compared to his toothier counterpart. Favoring fists to firearms, Mr. X comes across like a lion stalking prey - there's a sense of calculating intelligence driving him forward. Whereas a shotgun blast to the face will at least elicit a roar of fury from the Nemesis, Mr. X gives you... nothing. No anger, no frustration, just silence. Complete and utter silence.
Nemesis is one scary beast without a doubt, and you'd have a hell of a time turning a doorknob before he covers the distance in the span of seconds, but there's something truly terrifying about Mr. X's refusal to so much as jog. It's almost as if he knows the final outcome of your struggle, and everything up to that point is just going through the motions.
It's the difference between Leatherface and Michael Myers.
