20 Most Terrifying Video Game Enemies Of The Decade
10. Ayakakashi - Silent Hill f (2025)
The Silent Hill series has always been a home for grotesque and frightening enemies, with the likes of Pyramid Head being among the most iconic. Silent Hill f, the latest entry in the franchise, is no exception.
When 16-year-old Hinako and her friends are inexplicably transported to a nightmarish version of their small town, they quickly come face-to-face with an ensemble of disturbing creatures. One of the most unsettling is the Ayakakashi.
Scarecrow-like enemies that resemble high school students in tattered uniforms, these sickle-wielding monsters have eerie smiles carved into their faces and contort their bodies in unnatural ways. Even scarier than their appearance is that they can only move whenever they're not being looked at, attacking only when players wander too close. Especially when appearing in large groups, it's difficult for players to identify which one they can hear getting closer while their back is turned.
Like this series' other foes, the Ayakakashi also have a deeper psychological significance. Specifically, their fake expression and cruelty can be interpreted as the protagonist's anxieties about conforming with the strict social pressures of high school in 1960s Japan.
It's inclusions like the Ayakakashi that make Silent Hill f's horror so evocative.
