20 Most Terrifying Video Game Enemies Of The Decade

9. Marta - Outlast 2 (2017)

The first Outlast game was a sadistic and gruesome outing that saw players frantically flee from the deranged inhabitants of a mental asylum. For the sequel, developers Red Barrels turned up the depravity to a whole new level of deviance as unfortunate protagonist Blake Langermann tried to rescue his wife from a fanatical cult.

Throughout his harrowing ordeal, Langermann is brutalised by several members of the psychopathic cult as well as his own inner demon. Out of them all, however, it's Marta who makes the strongest impression.

The cult's devout, gravelly voiced enforcer, Marta's towering stature and enormous pickaxe, fashioned to resemble a crucifix, make her an intimidating presence whenever she's on screen. No moment better embodies the anxiety-induced terror of this enemy than when players are tasked with manoeuvring a wooden cart to climb a fence to escape from her. The relentless and palpable stress of having her so close is matched only by the visceral, stomach-churning way that she dispatches Blake when she catches him.

The first stalker enemy that players contend with, Marta sets the bar high for the vicious terror players can expect to find throughout the rest of the game.
