Ever since Dark Souls arrived in 2011, FromSoftware have become recognised as delivering some of the most punishingly difficult games over the past decade. Long before the term "Soulsborne" existed, however, the prize for brutal difficulty went to Ghosts N' Goblins.

Beginning life as an arcade game before arriving on the NES, this was an uncompromising side-scroller swarming with enemies and devious traps where players could only withstand two hits before dying. Numerous sequels would release over the following years, with spin-off title Maximo taking the series into 3D territory when it arrived on the PS2 in 2001.

Known as Maximo: Ghosts To Glory in the US, the game follows the titular hero as he fights to stop an evil sorcerer from raising an undead army.  Alongside maintaining the franchise's notorious difficulty, the inclusion of precise 3D platforming and challenging hack-and-slash combat updated this classic series for the 21st century.

Despite a lacklustre sequel ending Maximo's time in the spotlight, the success of Elden Ring and Silksong shows that there's still a hunger for games like Maximo. By refining its combat and connecting its various levels into a more streamlined open world, a Maximo remake could stand alongside Dark Souls.
