9. No Man's Sky Suffers From Immense Over-Hype
Release Date: TBA The Hype: A timed exclusive for the PS4 and one of the most intriguing indie titles of year, No Man's Sky is a procedurally generated open universe sci-fi game, in which the player explores the vast universe in a spaceship, interacting with the flora and fauna in any way they wish. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the game is that the procedurally-generated universe means that the game will unfold only as gamers themselves play through it: if you're the first to discover one of the 18 quintillion possible planets the game mechanics allow, then you can share information about the planet with anyone else who visits it afterwards. Why It Might Suck: This has Spore written all over it, a similarly hyped-up title with an extremely ambitious premise which it sadly couldn't live up to. It's possible that No Man's Sky will simply fail to deliver enough fresh gameplay and new ideas to fill its massive universe, and given that the world relies on the Internet, that's always a potential recipe for disaster. Though it certainly looks promising, the most daring new titles are also the riskiest, and it shouldn't be surprising if this game is one of two extremes: the best game of the year or a total bust.
