20 Reasons The Year's Biggest Video Games Might Suck
15. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Completely Derails The Continuity
Release Date: September 1 The Hype: The first core game in the Metal Gear Solid series since 2008's Guns of the Patriots, going back in time once again, this time to observe how Big Boss took revenge for the slaughter of his army in last year's Ground Zeroes. With a visually stunning open-world, this should be the least-linear of all the MGS games, while Kiefer Sutherland controversially replaces David Hayter as the voice of the title character, and iconic characters such as Ocelot and Kaz Miller return. Why It Might Suck: It's tough to imagine MGS V being a total failure, but Hideo Kojima is capable of a slip-up like anyone else. After all, this is a major step forward for the franchise, with the cinematic nature of the series being scaled back heavily to give way to open-world gameplay, and it's possible that in doing this the story could suffer, alienating the most hardcore fans. Even ignoring that, it's always possible that Kojima just hurls too many ridiculous twists into the mix (as was a criticism by many of MGS 4), and even up-ends some of his own previously established continuity. In typical MGS nature, the various crazy revelations will no doubt just give fans more questions until the next inevitable game.
