Recently, there has been a noticeable shift within the gaming industry. As AAA titles continue to come out unfinished, buggy, and overloaded with underwhelming features, many players have begun paying more attention to indie titles, finding them to be far superior to their big studio counterparts.

If the increasing number of independently developed titles rocking the sales charts is anything to go by, it’s clear that indie gaming is on the rise. In just the last three years alone, there have been so many small studio titles that have been outdoing AAA productions; more and more people are becoming skeptical if bigger budget means better product!

In fact, quite a few indie titles have thrown down the proverbial gauntlet to some of the industry’s biggest titans, threatening to put in some much-needed competition in their respective fields.

Chances are you've already heard about these seemingly small-time indie games. However, if you haven't seen them or you just haven't heard the full story of how they managed to beat AAA titles at their own game, you can read about them here! They are all must-play titles, so make sure to check them out!

20. Silksong Is A Remedy For Soulslike Fatigue

The last couple of years have ushered in a “soulslike fatigue” within the gaming industry. The flood of Dark Souls clones across all platforms has greatly reduced people’s enthusiasm in the genre, especially since most of them, like Wuchang Fallen Feather or Lies of P, have only been decent but not groundbreaking releases.

This is why a game like Silksong is a welcome break from the norm.

If the recent crashes on Steam caused by Hollow Knight fans overwhelming the servers with their purchase orders haven’t made this clear enough, Silksong is an independently made Soulslike that provides the kind of quality you could expect from FromSoftware.

The game brilliantly combines Soulslike gameplay with Metroidvania elements, creating a unique 2D “Dark Souls” experience, with additional platforming challenges that put an innovative spin on the genre.

Since the release of the original Hollow Knight, there have been many 2D Dark Souls clones that follow the same scheme, but Silksong separates itself from its competition with its improvements on the original Hollow Knight, one-of-a-kind visuals, and a captivating story.

The recent surge of negative comments about its poor Chinese translation might have scared some people off, but rest assured—the game is still the highest quality Soulslike of this year.
