These delightful creatures were introduced into the franchise on the second instalment, and frankly, they were a bloody nightmare. Far scarier than Hunters (who just look like big unwieldy frogs), the Licker resembles a man turned inside out. There are far harder monsters to kill in the franchise, but Lickers are especially freaky with their brains on show. Which is usually the thing that pops into your head first at night after you play.

Both Claire and Jill are such strong characters, Jill carried Resident Evil 3 by herself and Claire did a sterling job with Code Veronica. Ada Wong is also a very strong female character who pops up throughout the franchise and has her own run in Resident Evil 6. Even Rebecca Chambers, the erstwhile cheerleader, proves her mettle in Resident Evil 0. But the less said about Sheva the better...
