20 Things RPGs Taught Us About Life

5. Merry Traveling Bands Of Companions

In your time wandering the land, you'll encounter several folk who you'll help out and they'll then join you on your quest afterwards, completely abandoning their former life. These people you meet will always be dressed more snazzily than others in the area, have a half-decent crazy hairstyle and are almost always a specialist in magic, fighting monsters you couldn't hurt before, healing your companions, summoning the aid of massive beasts or stealing things from the enemy. There may also be times during your quest where you will be briefly joined by an uber-powerful individual who is much more awesome than the rest of your team. Unfortunately this person will then leave, even though they're probably more qualified to stop the massive threat to society than you'll ever be.

4. Don't Put All Your EXP In One Basket

On your quest, after picking up the aforementioned merry traveling band of companions, you'll have to decide which three or four of these guys you'd like to wander around with your as your personal entourage. The rest will stay in the background, only popping up when there's a plotpoint. Only focusing on three or four of your party members is not without its drawbacks however, as a few things may happen: The female character you've spent ages training will be kidnapped and can't be used for several battles You're forced into a situation where you must use the supporting cast who are so weak it's ridiculous A character you've spent ages training will be killed off completely, rendering your efforts futile Your main character may be struck down with an affliction that means you can't use them Important lesson here; don't neglect the supporting cast.
