20 Trailers So Bad They KILLED Video Games
2. Diablo Immortal
Diablo Immortal once again highlights how a video game can be tarnished, not by a trailer's quality but its presentation.
Revealed at BlizzCon 2018, the game served as Blizzard's big Diablo announcement after years of fan anticipation. Instead of unveiling the heavily rumoured Diablo IV however, the company presented a mobile-only title, Diablo Immortal. The role-playing dungeon crawler had been entrenched in PC gaming since day one, so this announcement clashed with the fanbase.
The backlash escalated in the Q&A that followed when an audience member asked if the reveal was an "out-of-season April Fool's joke". Blizzard attempted damage control with the infamous comment, "Do you guys not have phones?," which came across as condescending and tone-deaf.
Four years after the calamitous reveal, Diablo Immortal was finally released and was met with an overwhelming "meh". Due to the ruthless micro-transactions, grind-heavy gameplay, and lack of offline play, it's a wonder why Blizzard thought this dud had potential.
Even though Diablo IV eventually saw the light of day and was well received, Diablo Immortal lives on in infamy. Although the game itself is mostly forgotten, the nothingburger trailer will become a cautionary tale for decades to come.
