20 Trailers So Bad They KILLED Video Games
1. Mighty No. 9
Developed by Comcept and Inti Creates, Mighty No. 9 serves as a love letter to Mega Man (at least, it was supposed to).
The Kickstarter-funded side-scroller was intended as a spiritual successor to the Blue Bomber. (To emulate Capcom's beloved hero, the creators even hired the original Mega Man designer, Keiji Inafune, to work on the project.)
Though it reached its crowdfunded goal within days, Mighty No. 9 was anything but mighty, due to its lack of content, amateur voice acting, poor design, and deluge of technical problems.
Having said that, it was obvious Mighty No. 9 was a lost cause the instant that trailer dropped. Although the footage is nothing to write home about, it's the obnoxious voice-over that kills any potential hype. While showing the bland gameplay, the narrator brags about the rudimentary mechanics as if they're jaw-dropping features. (He acts like absorbing enemies' powers is a game-changer, despite being a staple in Mega Man lore since the eighties.)
The most embarrassing line is saved for last with the narrator saying the hero will make the bad guys "cry like an anime-fan on prom night". (Why did anybody involved think that remark wouldn't backfire?)
Even if Mighty No. 9 was a solid side-scroller, the biggest fans would have little incentive to check it out after catching a glimpse of its cringey teaser.
