Not the first Souls-like releasing in 2026, nor the last mentioned in this list. Nioh might be the most popular of all Souls-like spinoffs though, carving out a space that several other developers have struggled to find - not to mention their own rival output in the sub-genre (e.g., Rise of the Ronin, Wo-Long: Fallen Dynasty).
One reason it might've resonated is that the first Nioh released just as the trend was picking up steam, managing to steal a loyal fanbase before oversaturation hit. More importantly, though, Team Ninja was making epic boss battles, breakneck action, and controller-smashing difficult games (e.g., Ninja Gaiden series) well before Demon’s Souls even entered development. All Nioh did was place those core strengths into a more digestible formula that had become the industry standard.
So, Nioh’s third entry has a chance for a lucrative next year slot, despite looking like more of the same. Releasing in February, it might stand a chance for at least some amount of time before Rockstar unleash GTA 6... but don't count your chickens on this one.
